FontanaFrogFan: Actually, the elderly seem to have a lower risk of contracting swine flu. The theory is that before 1957, a flu strain similar to the swine flu made people create antibodies that can fight the swine flu. http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/news/20090520/swine-flu-less-severe-over-50s True, this assertion not completely conclusive, but scientists have noted that with new flu strains, the younger demographics are always hit the hardest. http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=100548 Besides, schools have always been a prime breeding spot for germs to meet, mingle, and spread. Ask kindergarten teachers; they're always bringing home fun diseases. Plus, the announcement says the government is "aiming to have at least 120 million doses...by October." That doesn't mean there'll ONLY be 12 doses EVER. To me, the way the government is handling this seems to make sense so far.

I think at some point, Ayatollah Khamenei could've agreed to a recount and maybe sabotaged that vote, a little more cleverly. For everyone who's convinced the election was rigged, everything he does now looks like a lame attempt to (like this article says) divert accusing fingers elsewhere. To me, it looks like he's undermining his own authority.

I could quibble over the idea that we've seemed to have forgotten about the troops, but I like your overall message. I do agree that the "remember the troops" advertisements did die down over the year, which is unfortunate. Morale's always a huge issue, especially in an unpopular war. Good reminder.

I just read about efforts on the transparency policy. Data.gov launched a couple of weeks ago, and though some critics claim that privately-run information sites are so far more efficient, it's still being worked on. Plus, data sharing between departments (not just FDA) is off to a slow start--but it's a pretty solid start.

Maybe they should've claimed that they overreacted and underestimated the economy's condition. An alternate spin to turn the whole thing into a "we erred on the side of caution" and maybe boost morale. I do wonder how one measures avoided job losses. I tend to think those statistics, if any, are fluff--for morale, of course.

That's an interesting defintion of "reverse racism" from urbandictionary. I'd think reverse racism is when people are so anti-racist that they end up being just as hateful as racists. I believe in acceptance of all races, but I don't believe in stygmatizing racists so much as to alienate them.

I think MplsVala has my opinion down pat. Legalizing it will boost the economy, reduce the amount of people in jail, and also minimize the whole illegal thrill/danger of obtaining it. As for the smell and nuisance of people smoking it? What they have in other countries are smoking parlours, where smoking MJ is restricted. Like a bar--you keep the intoxicated people in one place. They enjoy themselves, they don't bother you. Sure, once they leave you have the classic sobriety problem, but the same restrictions on drunk drivers can apply to high drivers.

Based on the Chinese government's claim, the web-screening software doesn't sound any different from what most the Internet explorer web browswer already has built in. Protecting children from "harmful material" is a world-wide parental concern, but the fact that such a mandate comes from the government--especially one that has a record of restricting information--is bound to arouse suspicion. I understand, though, that Dell and other computer program companies are evaluating the program for unmentioned functions. It'd be wild if there anything unsanctioned was discovered.

It still amazes me that nuclear war is somehow a valid response in certain leader's heads--especially since N. Korea isn't the only one with nuclear arms. One country or another will retaliate in the same way if North Korea launches, and its "dignity and sovereignty" won't even exist. I realize that this kind of logic doesn't do much to reduce global tensions; it just befuddles me.

I think the biggest benefit of PhysEd is getting kids to stand up and take a break from mental (or sleeping) activity. Six hours straight of pure book learning's gonna wear your attention span down and make your butt hurt. Getting up and moving around not only wakes you up, but revitalizes your attention for better learning.

The thought of money simply being handed to people would make everyone else working pretty angry. It's tricky trying to simply inject money into a financial system while trying to be fair to everyone, in a way that'll boost the system for the long-term. I'm also thinking of how much of that money would end up on illegal transactions, basically leaking out of the system unaccounted for. Not to say everyone unemployed does illegal things, but free money always seems hard to use responsibly.

People keep criticizing Obama for making "rosy predictions" that won't come true, but what is he supposed to do? Tell everyone that the country is on an unstoppable downhill slope and anything anyone does about it is futile? The main thing is that Obama has acknowledged that things need to be better, and focusing on tiny points of optimism doesn't seem like a bad method of encouragement.
