The “free encyclopedia anyone can edit” has just banned members of the Church of Scientology from doing just that, according to ABC News.
A Wikipedia committee restricted access to its Web site from computers owned by the church after a 10-0 ruling showed that church members were editing or writing articles about the church in a pro-biased way.
“All IP addresses owned or operated by the Church of Scientology and its associates, broadly interpreted, are to be blocked . . .,” ABC News reported the Wikipedia committee as saying.
Wikipedia will block the Church of Scientology’s IP addresses. An IP address shows a computer’s location.
While individual people have been banned from editing articles on Wikipedia before, this is the first time that an entire organization has been banned.
“(Scientology advocates were) getting together, saying, ‘Let’s work together to make this a more pro-scientology article,’” Dan Rosenthal, a media contact for Wikipedia, told ABC News.
At the moment, there are no media reports that the Church of Scientology has commented on the ban.
The church was founded by sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard in 1953.
Wikipedia shouldn't be used for biased opinions, it is afterall an encyclapedia. people use it for finding out facts, they don't want some preachy advertisement. It is good that wikipedia are taking the policing of their page seriously.
That is why the vote was 10-0 against the Church of Scientology. The facts speak for themselves and let people make their own decisions. The Church of Scientology has other means of attracting people. Look at Cruise and Travolta.
Wikipedia is good to look up facts in general, but realistically, its "facts" shouldn't be used for serious research. The fact that anyone can edit content is enough to not make it 100 percent reliable. I'm sure people that believe in scientology will still find a way to post their "facts" on the site.
