The song is catchy, and actors engaging, but their message is misleading, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In fact, the FTC felt that the advertising had come so close to crossing the line that it has created its own catchy videos in an effort to ridicule the advertising efforts of the companies in question.
In a press release announced last week, the new videos highlight the “…differences between AnnualCreditReport.com and those other sites that claim to provide “free” credit reports. Other sites require users to pay hidden fees or agree to additional services. For example, some sites provide a free credit report if you enroll in a new service. If you don’t cancel the service during a short trial period, you’re likely to see membership fees on your credit card statement.”
They also reinforced the provisions of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which “…requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies – Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax – to provide a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months from AnnualCreditReport.com, a toll-free telephone number, or a mailing address. Details are at www.ftc.gov/freereports.”
The FTC strongly recommends each consumer review their credit report regularly as an effective way to deter and detect identity theft.
It isn't surprising to find out that there is a hidden meaning in advertising. People shouldn't only rely on a catchy tune and commercial for completely correct information - look into the details first.
I used ONE of THOSE COMPANIES and it gave me 2 of my credit reports and left the last one out asking for money. Luckily I read the small fine print that stated they would charge fees in you didn't cancel your free membership in a certain amount of days. They tried to persuade me into keeping the membership but I was that if I was going to pay for a membership then I should have all three reports!!!! AM I RIGHT OR WRONG FOR FEELING THAT WAY? I am happy to know NOW that when my 12 months role around again I know exactly where to go to get my free credit reports
Yea, they're tricky, but there IS a way to get a free credit report from each of the three credit companies, why not stress how to do that instead of focusing on this dumb ad campaign?
