A Wal-Mart employee from the suburbs of New York City was trampled early Friday morning as customers stampeded into the store, ripping the front doors off their hinges.
According to the New York Times, the unidentified 34-year-old employee was knocked down by the crowd and then stepped on by several people as they surged into the store at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Steam, N.Y. The man was then rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead at 6 a.m.
Police said the exact cause of death had not yet been determined. The police also said that three other shoppers were injured, and a 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to the hospital for observation.
The Wal-Mart company called the death a “tragic situation” and that they were working with the police.
“The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority,” Wal-Mart said in a statement.
