According to Haaretz, Israeli officials said Sunday that the final major Hamas senior official in Ramallah has been captured.
The Israeli police, Shin Bet Security and the Israel Defense Force, arrested Maher Udda in a joint effort Sunday after a reportedly decade long effort to put the suspected Hamas terrorist into custody.
According to Haaretz, Udda, 47, was born in Ein Yabrud, a town slightly north of Ramallah. He joined Hamas sometime in the early 1990s and quickly became the leader of a small faction of the terrorist organization in his hometown. After being arrested and held for a short time in 1998, Udda was promoted to a senior position of an armed sect of Hamas in Ramallah.
Udda’s primary role as a Hamas leader was to raise funding for and coordinate attacks in the Ramallah area. According to Haaretz, Israeli officials expect that Udda served as deputy to Ibrahim Hamed, leader of the Ramallah-area Hamas sect.
Israeli forces captured Hamed in 2006. According to Haaretz, Hamas has repeatedly offered to release captured Isreali soldier Gilad Shalit in exchange for Hamed. Israel has repeatedly denied that request.
The Israeli government has been searching for Udda since early 2000.
