After years of struggle over provisions amidst members of the European Union, the Lisbon Treaty was finally completed in November. Now European officials have gathered in Lisbon, Portugal where the treaty was first signed two years ago to hold a ceremony honoring the event.
The Lisbon Treaty contains a series of rule changes that will bring a number of significant changes to the European Union. Among the changes, the first permanent president has been established, with former Belgian prime minister Herman Van Rompuy taking the position. He will begin his term in Janurary.
According to VOA News, Rompuy only provided a few brief comments to the press, noting that he will have plenty of time in the coming years to answer the many questions that will develop from the changes.
“The European Union has been at the forefront of efforts to fight climate change. It is determined to play a leading, constructive role at the Copenhagen conference and to contribute to reaching a global, ambitious and comprehensive agreement," Rompuy said at the ceremony.
