South Africa President Jacob Zuma became an unlikely hero in the war against AIDS. Once criticized for his jokes about the condition, he announced a bold series of plans to help provide faster, expanded treatment for HIV-positive babies and pregnant women.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, the same day that World AIDS Day is observed around the world.
"At another moment in our history, in another context, the liberation movement observed that the time comes in the life of any nation when there remain only two choices: submit or fight," Zuma said. "That time has now come in our struggle to overcome AIDS. Let us declare now, as we declared then, that we shall not submit."
The new plan follows guidelines issued by the World Health Organization in regards to treating HIV-infected women. Through the treatment, health analysts suggest that survival rates should greatly improve for children South Africa.
