Friday morning saw the release of Motorola and Verizon's new Droid phone.
Hyped towards being an iPhone killer and with early reviews looking positive, it is perhaps a bit surprising that Verizon stores did not see a swarm of people charging to buy the phone.
Although lines did form outside major stores, the most significant crowds appeared at a New York midnight opening in which only 100 people attended.
Although Verizon is downplaying the incident, remarking that constant purchases are better than an initial rush, the relative lack of interest looks to be a good sign that the iPhone killer won't reach its mark with many users seeing little need to switch from their beloved iPhones.
The release of a "killer" phone is only one example of many that occurs often in the world of technology. Once a seemingly perfect device enters the world, rival companies work hard to try and dethrone it. While some reach moderate success, oftentimes claims of being a "killer" app often fall short.
A classic example can be seen in the form of the Nintendo Game Boy that has dominated handheld gaming for many years before finally seeing significant competition from Sony's PSP and cell phone gaming.
Verizon might have a hit on their hands with the Droid, but only time will tell if it will prove to be an "iPhone Killer" or fade away like those phones that have come before it.
Early reviews by tech pundits reveal a touch screen that isn;t very sensitive, a build quality that seems cheap and brick like and a keyboard that's not easy to use.
Plus, the android system has obvious flaws that keep it from being the iPhone killer OS "everybody" wants. In addition, the few apps available for it are a poor substitute for the 100,000 available for the iPhone.
Apple has, in the iPhone, a simple, easy to use portable computer that just happens to have a phone in it. Couple that with just about any app you may need for just about anything you want to do, and you've got what is obviously a winner.

Apple is years ahead of any of its competitors.
Live with it.
