Spammer Pays Facebook $711 Million

Advert
Technology Share
Facebook has been awarded $711 million in damages as the result of a court case that involved massive spamming on Facebook from Sanford Wallace.

Wallace was accused of breaking Facebook rules and launching a massive spam campaign. Wallace sent Facebook users a link to a website which would cause users to accidentally provide their login information. Wallace then used the compromised accounts to send additional messages to other users. Other messages sent by Wallace led to other websites which paid Wallace for the additional traffic.

Facebook initially wanted over 7 billion dollars as permitted by specific legal acts. The judge proceeding over the case lowered the amount to $711 million.

Unfortunately, the ruling may not deter future spammers. Analysts suggest that Facebook has thrown down a challenge for spammers, who as a result will try harder to find a way to crack the system.

As I was reading this I had hoped that this news would deter future spammers. Unfortunately, that may not be the case.

Yeah. Many hackers and spammers view cases like this as a challenge. Let them build a bigger wall so we can have fun proving our technical genius and destroy it, so to speak. Unfortunately this may only prove to be a temporary solution.

Shame that the facebook users who were harmed by the spammer are unlikely to actually see any of the damages award.

No one will receive any money from this loser. He has already declared bankruptcy. Hopefully, he will be allowed to engage in a 50 cents an hour gainful employment during a fairly long stretch in free public housing in a nice clean cell with no access to the internet.
