CERP Authorizes New Taliban Initative for U.S. in Afghanistan

President Obama has signed a bill on Wednesday that will pay Taliban members to fight for the US in Afghanistan, according to CNN.
This program is modeled after a similar one was implemented in Iraq. “Sons of Iraq” promised young insurgent members jobs and amnesty if they agreed to fight for the U.S. The initiative helped neutralize the insurgency movement in the area by separating the Taliban members from the leaders.
On Wednesday President Obama signed the Commander’s Emergency Response Program (CERP), a $680 billion bill that has a provision that would allow US military forces to target low level Taliban officials in Afghanistan in 2010.
Military officials are hoping this program will combat the rising rate of soldier deaths in the region this year.
