According a report released Tuesday by the World Economic Forum, Iceland, as well as three Scandinavian nations lead the world in terms of gender equality, the New York Times reported.
The Forum, a non-profit organization, ranked countries based on progressive tendencies towards various factors of society, although it attempted to remove the influence of economic well-being.
Iceland's high score was partially attributed to its economic decline- the decreasing salaries have lead to a greater equalization in pay between the two genders, although the country's "removal of barriers in the workplace" also attributed to the high score.
The report further emphasized the social programs of Scandinavian nations promoting equality by ensuring equal access to public goods and improving general well-being.
