Opposition Socialists won in Greek national elections on Sunday as voters rejected the incumbent center-right party.
According to the Wall Street Journal, early official estimates indicate Pasok, of the Socialist party, secured 43.8% of the vote, guaranteeing 160 seats in Greece's 300-member parliament.
"This is a historic victory, which also comes with very great responsibilities," senior Pasok parliamentarian Evangelos Venizelos told the Wall Street Journal. The new government expects to pass a number of stimulus packages it says are crucial to the Greek economy.
The incumbent New Democracy party had 33.9% of the vote, shrinking its 151-seat majority to 92 seats. The center-right party had been tarred by scandals and unpopular economic policies during its five and a half years in office.
"This is a chance for Pasok to really show its stuff. I think we can expect some positive surprises," Spyros Draenos told the Wall Street Journal. "I think people are really happy."
"Voters gave a clear, strong mandate to George Papandreou, who will now have adequate power to fight the crisis,” Anthony Livanios, political analyst, told Reuters. “There is no if, there is no grey area. New Democracy suffered its worst loss in its history for three reasons. Its economic program did not convince people, its political campaign was focused on right-wing voters in order to block leaks to LA.O.S, but LA.O.S increased its strength vis-a-vis New Democracy.”
