The UN unanimously passed a resolution committed to producing global nuclear disarmament on Thursday, Reuters reported.
The resolution was US-drafted, and the Security Council headed by the US President for the first time 1946.
The resolution does not force any immediate action, and many nations- including crucial security council members- have admitted to not having any intentions to disarm at any point in the immediately near future.
The treaty in question does not mention Iran, North Korea, India, and other nations assumed to have nuclear capabilities by name, however, the resolution politely asked them to disarm. Stronger sanctions against Iran for failing to halt its nuclear activity were proposed as well.
Despite these failings, analysts remain optimistic, stating that the passage of the resolution itself shows significant progress towards the goal.
Another summit will be hosted by President Obama in April to discuss further securing of nuclear materials.
