Schwarzenegger Asks Judges to Delay Ruling on Prison Crowding
Advert
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has asked a panel of judges to delay their order that the state produce a plan to reduce prison crowding by Sept. 18, saying that he will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court if need be, according to the L.A. Times.
Although the governor does support reducing the number of inmates, his spokeswoman, Rachel Cameron, said in a statement that the governor's plan is "a responsible policy," while "the court's order could force the state to release tens of thousands of prisoners without any supervision, which would have an enormous impact on public safety."
The governor's plan, according to the Times, includes "home detention for some inmates, reduced parole supervision for low-level offenders and some sentencing reductions." However, the judges have indicated that they would pursue similar measures. Both the panel and Schwarzenegger also approve reducing the population of inmates by around 40,000 over the next two years.
Perhaps the key issue is the deadline. The order would require the state legislature to pass a plan by Sept. 18. Currently, the Senate and the Assembly have passed two different versions of the bill, and according to the Times, "so far there is no sign of compromise between the two houses."
