The United States and Colombia have agreed on a deal that will allow the U.S. military access to seven bases in the country of Colombia. There are currently 300 American troops already stationed in the South American country bordered by Venezuela, Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. An expansion of up to 800 U.S. soldiers and 600 civilian officials will be allowed under the deal that is expected to be in effect over the next 10 years.
Colombia’s neighbors and allies within UNASUR (Union of South American Nations) have vehemently expressed their concern for their continued right to sovereignty as independent nation states should there be any such U.S. intervention in Latin American politics. But Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has described his pact with the U.S. solely as strategic in his country’s battle against drug traffickers and insurgents. "We are not talking about a political game, we are talking about a threat that has spilled blood in Colombian society," President Uribe has stated.
Those in opposition have vocalized their concern towards President Uribe’s decision to allow U.S. access in his country. President Chavez of Venezuela has said, "The U.S. global strategy for domination explains the installation of these bases in Colombia."
"So now we're narcoterrorists. When they couldn't call us communists anymore, they called us subversives, and then traffickers, and since the September 11 attacks, terrorists. The history of Latin America repeats itself," chimed in Bolivian President Evo Morales.
Of the 12 countries allied within UNASUR, leaders have communicated that routine inspections of the U.S. bases be necessary and for the United States to promise not to further expand military presence. Such stipulations were visible when the leaders collectively stated in a signed declaration that what they wanted was to "reaffirm that the presence of foreign military forces must not menace the sovereignty and integrity of a South American country and in consequence regional peace and stability."
