In the midst of her reelection campaign, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has threatened energy sanctions against Iran if it fails to comply with the international demands regarding its nuclear program.
Germany is one of six countries, the other five being the United Nations Security Council, currently banding together to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, the Associated Press reports. Two of those nations – namely China and Russia, will have to be negotiated with before sanctions are put into place.
Iran is largely reliant on petrol imports due to poor refining capacity, despite its wealth of oil resources.
The six nations are currently planning to meet in September. Further action will be decided then depending on whether or not any progress with Iran is made.
