While Congress continues to debate the intricacies of President Obama’s health care plan, Senator Ted Kennedy anxiously watches from his home as he battles brain cancer, reported the Los Angeles Times.
Kennedy, 77, the third-longest-serving senator in history, has been fighting for this kind of legislation for 46 years, reported the Los Angeles Times.
The Boston Herald reported that yesterday, July 26, Ted Kennedy was “in good spirits as he returned from an afternoon sail with family.”
Kennedy’s son Patrick, a Democratic congressman from Rhode Island, said, "He (Ted Kennedy) has lived for this day when America would finally extend this right (health care) to every citizen. There's no doubt if he could, he would be here in the thick of this.”
Ted Kennedy has said that giving the right to affordable health care to all citizens has been his “life’s cause,” reported the Los Angeles Times.
The Los Angeles Times cites Ted Kennedy’s life experiences – “his brothers' deaths, his son Ted Jr.'s partial leg amputation from bone cancer, his daughter Kara's lung cancer“ – as reasons for the senator’s push for health care reform.
Senator Kennedy, in a personal essay published in Newsweek, said “I have enjoyed the best medical care money (and a good insurance policy) can buy.... Every American should be able to get the same treatment that U.S. senators are entitled to,"
Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said, "One of the biggest problems is unifying the Democrats. And to be honest with you, he's (Ted Kennedy) the only person I know in the Democratic Party who could bring together its five largest groups," reported ABC News.
Ted Kennedy added, near the end of his essay in Newsweek, that "we're almost there."
