Family Guy Pulls off Emmy Nod, Signifying Shift in Comedy
Advert
Family Guy has been nominated for an Emmy under the comedy category, becoming the first animated show to do so since caveman times - well, since "The Flintstones" did it in 1961.
In doing so, it pulled off what "King of the Hill" and the "Simpsons" have been rallying for but unable to accomplish.
According to the LA Times, the show centers on jokes about "celebrities, politics, religion, and bodily functions", and is popular among young men.
The nomination not only signifies an expansion of the comedy category to include animation, but a general shift away from the typical conventional comedy show - the sitcom. The Times notes that for the first time, none of the comedy nominees, which include "The Office" and "30 Rock," are produced in the conventional sitcom style, which is shot with multiple cameras, a laugh track and theatrical touches, pioneered by "I Love Lucy" and climaxed by "Frasier" and "Seinfield."
"The playing field is different now," said "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, whose recent $100-million deal with Fox reportedly made him the highest-paid writer in television, to the Times.
