Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made Mumbai, the commercial capital of its country, her first stop in India. According to the New York Times, she spent breakfast with the wealthy bankers and billionaires of India’s growing economy to discuss climate change, education, and health care.
Billionaires offered their ideas about how their companies could improve India’s poverty situation. Ratan Tata’s Tata Group already provides necessary nutrients to young mothers and children, with the belief that improving the nutritional status of children was a crucial way to approach poverty.
Known for her push for education and women’s rights, Hillary Clinton spent much of the rest of the day visiting and speaking about the two topics.
The Hindu, India’s national newspaper, reports that Clinton spoke at St. Xavier’s College, appearing with Bollywood actor Aamir Khan. The two spoke together on improving education for children to improve the overall future.
As the first lady in 1995, Clinton had made a connection with the Self Employed Women’s Association, a cooperative of 1 million women who support themselves with embroidery. She made a returning trip while in Mumbai.
Speaking about climate change, Clinton was faced with the different stances India and the United States have on the issue.
The United States, a developed country, believes that developing countries need to be held accountable for their carbon emissions. The Indian government argues that carbon emission restrictions at this point for developing economies would stint their progress.
Hillary Clinton also spoke about the importance of fighting terrorism, which would hit home for many citizens of Mumbai. In November 2008, a coordinated terrorist attack that Indian and the U.S. blame on a Pakistani militant group killed 173 people and wounded over 300.
I think it's great that Hillary Clinton spoke to the billionaires about helping India's poverty crisis. Hopefully this will make an impact in Indian society and we will see some changes in the near future.
