NASA’s new pictures of the moon offer conclusive proof that man stood on the moon’s surface 40 years ago.
The pictures were taken by NASA’s lunar scout, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and though the images show where Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on July 20, 1969, the pictures do not reveal whether the American flag that they planted on the surface is still standing.
Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched June 18, has seven high-tech cameras and was built to look for suitable landing sites for future manned missions while creating a more complete lunar atlas.
"We were very interested in getting our first peek at the lunar module descent stages just for the thrill - and to see how well the cameras had come into focus," Mark Robinson, principal investigator of the LRO's main camera, said http://news.cnet.com/8301-19514_3-10289551-239.html: in a statement. "Indeed, the images are fantastic and so is the focus."
