Two young children were struck by an elderly driver while going across a crosswalk Wednesday morning in Medfield near Boston, reports TheBostonChannel.com.
The driver, an 88-year-old woman, was leaving a church parking lot when she hit a 5-year-old and a 23-month-old walking with their grandmother.
According to the Medfield Police Department Chief, the injuries sustained were not life-threatening, but facial trauma was reported on the infant.
Another elderly driver was connected to hitting and killing a young child in the area last month. The 4-year-old girl was riding a scooter when she was struck.
A study has been done by The Automobile Insurers Bureau of Massachusetts that reports drivers under the age of 75 are significantly safer than those over the age of 75.
Numerous bills have been proposed to limit elderly drivers or to make sure they are still able to safely maneuver a vehicle. One bill would require those 85 and older to re-test for a driver’s license every five years.
How about a legitimate test for licensing? Over my objections, my 80 year old mother who had impaired heaing, poor eyesight, numb feet from diabetic neuropathy, and very slow reactions, was issued a new license. A few months later, she surrenderd it voluntarily after a near miss in which she got her foot stuck under the break pedal and on the gas pedal.
It seems to me that it should be possible to develop a simulator that would give an objective test of one's ability to drive a car safely in the face of obstacles such as a five year old walking in a crosswalk.
This should not have happened. They should make special cars for the elderly that stop before they hit something and gives them a better view of the road.
