An attack allegedly staged by Maoist rebels in India has left 29 policemen dead.
The first attack occurred early Sunday morning when rebels killed two policemen. At least 27 more policemen were killed in the counter-actions that Indian law enforcement took against the rebels after the first two officers were attacked and killed, reported the BBC.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that the Maoist rebels are the greatest threat to internal security. The group, along with other affiliated groups, has been banned in India. Police have authority to arrest members even if the individual does not become violent.
The incident that occurred on Sunday included attacks by rebels as well as the use of landmines in three different occurrences.
According to Bloomberg, 455 civilians and law enforcement officers have died in the six months leading up to June 30 due to the rebel attacks. The "war" between the government and the Maoist rebels has been going on for about 40 years.
