World’s ugliest dog dies at 15
The World’s Ugliest Dog title holder, Yoda, died on Saturday at the age of 15.
KSEE broke the news, saying that the pooch had a peaceful death while she was sleeping.
“She passed away last night in her sleep,” her owner, Terry Schumacher, told the Hanford Sentinel in an email Tuesday. “I will miss her funny little ways!”
The Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix won the World’s Ugliest Dog title at last year’s dog show at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, which earned her a spot on the Today show. Meeting Matt Lauer and Ann Curry, Yoda’s owner said that at first she thought the dog might be a rat and debated putting the animal down. The family decided to keep Yoda to appease Schumacher’s daughter. Ten years later, she has become a beloved member of the family.
When Curry asked if the family ever thought about getting Yoda a makeover, Schumacher replied, “We love her like just she is.”
Winning by popular texting vote, Schumacher took home a $1,000 prize. Yoda also won a trophy 15 times her size, a photo shoot and a night of pampering for her and her owner at the luxurious Loft Suite at the Sheraton Sonoma County in Petaluma. Time reports she was planning on entering Yoda again in the 2012 competition before her death.
