N.Y. teen charged with beating girlfriend’s baby to death
A Brooklyn teen was arrested on Sunday for allegedly beating his girlfriend’s 23-month-old baby to death.
Tyree Wright, 19, was charged with felony assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child after confessing to abusing toddler Jacqil Degraffenreid, New York Daily News reported. Sandy Silverstein, a spokeswoman for the Kings County district attorney’s office, said it was likely that the charges would be upgraded to murder.
Degraffenreid was found unconscious and unresponsive on Saturday by his mother after she left him in the care of Wright for close to four hours, the New York Times reported.
It was during this time that the baby boy died from “lacerations of the liver and pancreas with internal hemorrhage due to blunt-impact injuries,” Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city medical examiner’s office, said.
The child was taken to Kings County Hospital where he died. Doctors contacted the police after noticing bruising on the boy’s torso and forehead.
Detectives questioned the child’s mother, whose name has not yet been released, and have determined that she is not a suspect. Silverstein said that the case is still under investigation.
Michael J. Fagan, spokesman for the Administration for Children’s Services, said the agency is investigating the case, that he believes there are no other children involved.
