Susan G. Komen foundation continuing to shoot itself in the foot supporting guns for the cure

The Susan G. Komen foundation has stirred the pot again, endorsing a pink handgun on the heels of pulling funding from Planned Parenthood.

The Walther P-22 Hope Edition is being released in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to Discount Gun Sales site, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Seattle chapter of the Susan G. Komen foundation.

Complete with an exclusive pink slide, the Hope handgun is, of course, limited edition.

Things inside the Komen camp have left quite a few supporters shaking their heads this week. The foundation cut funding to Planned Parenthood on Tuesday, citing a new rule to prevent the organization from giving money to organizations under investigation by  federal, state or local government.

Planned Parenthood is being investigated to see if they used public funds to provide abortions, which only make up 3% of the organization’s activities. Over 90% of Planned Parenthood’s programming is preventative care, including the almost $700,000 in breast-screening exams provided through Komen funds to lower income people.

Despite its own self-imposed rule, Komen has yet to halt $7.5 million in grants to Penn State, where a child sex abuse scandal is being investigated by the fed.

It seems that the move to end Komen’s five-year relationship with Planned Parenthood was completely political.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has started a campaign to help replace Komen funds for Planned Parenthood. The mayor Tweeted Thursday, “Politics has no place in health care. Join me in standing with #PlannedParenthood,” followed by a pledge to match public donations:

Deliberately moving further to the right, Komen is starting to lose it’s credibility and respect as a top non-profit organization.

If the public matches Bloomberg’s donation, Planned Parenthood will be able to function without the Komen funds for this year.
