Prince William’s mission to the Falklands is causing tension

Prince William has departed for the Falklands on a British military mission for the RAF for six weeks. His arrival in the hotly disputed area has said to be causing tension related to events that occurred in 1982 over the territory Malvinas.

According to BBC News, the UK Defense Secretary Philip Hammond has adamantly denied that the deployment of the Prince is one of provocation, or political action towards Argentina, instead asserting that it is a”routine deployment”

The Defense Secretary went on to say that the missions is one of a “humanitarian function” and should not cause tension between the two nations.

The Argentine government has seen his deployment as a threat and accused the British of military action, stating that Prince William would be wearing the “uniform of a conquistador”, and protesting the arrival of the HMS Dauntless.

According to ABC News, the British still retain around 1,000 troops in the island off the coast Las Malvinas following the 1982 Argentine invasion that initiated a 10 week war

Tensions have arose over Prince William’s arrival into the islands, especially with the approach of the 30th anniversary of the invasion. On Friday, a small group of protestors marched on the British Embassy in Buenos Aires burning the Union Jack flag and demanding the return of Las Malvinas.
