New study finds that Android apps are more stable than iOS apps

Mobile application monitoring startup Crittercism has released a new report that claims iOS apps crash more often than Android apps.

Between December 1 and 15 Crittercism examined application crashes.

It was discovered that iOS 5.01 had 28.64 percent of overall crashes for both iOS and Android platforms.

According to Mashable, this is expected because iOS 5.01 is the newest version of the mobile operating system. It is possible that iOS developers have not adapted their apps for the newest version, which could be responsible for some of the crashes.

However, iOS 4.2.10 saw 12.64 percent of app crashes, iOS 4.3.3 had 10.66 percent, and iOS 4.1 had 8.24 percent.

Crittercism also analyzed over 214 million app launches from last November and December. They found that iOS had 3 times more app launches than Android. Even though iOS launched more apps than Android, percentage-wise they still saw more crashes.

Crittercism CEO Andrew Levy told Forbes that hardware issues, Internet connection, or memory problems could all be responsible for why apps crash.

“It can be a mix of both hardware and software issues that developers may or may not be responding to,” Levy added.

Levy explained that Android may see more crashes when their new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system is more widely available.

“I expect as Ice Cream Sandwich just launched and the new Nexus S phone launched (during the study), we’ll expect the same situation to occur (with Android) as what happened (with iOS),” he said.
