Infant accidently killed by dog
Thursday morning tragedy struck the home of 21-year-old mother Brandy Furlong and her 26-year-old baby’s daddy after the family dog attacked their 3-day-old infant.
According to police in McKeesport, PA, who told WPXI-TV, the husky made the attack at around 9:30 a.m. and wthin two hours, the infant was pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh from head wounds.
The accidental death occurred when the infant was left unattended too while Furlong quickly went to the bathroom. Within minutes, the family dog, who was wearing a muzzle, attacked. Furlong also has two other children, a 3-year-old and 6-year-old, who were not home at the time, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting.
Upon leaving the bathroom, she found one-of-four dogs she had in the home, lingering over the baby (who was left on the living room floor in an infant’s seat) heavily bleeding from his head and according to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, the dog was wearing a muzzle at the time of attack.
Pets, especially dogs, should not be trusted around children of any age.
Jennifer Shryock, a well known animal expert said, “Whenever a newborn comes into the home, they are unfamiliar to the family dog. This is the biggest risk factor. This is heartbreaking, there’s no way around it…but it is preventable,” Pittsburg Live has reported.
