Choose snacks wisely on Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl has a little bit of something for everyone. Whether you are an avid football fan, tune in for the commercials, or enjoy the snacks, many people will be celebrating on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Retail Advertising and Marketing Association released a survey that says consumers are expected to spend $11 billion on food and snacks. Last year, only $10.1 billion was reportedly spent.

With so much money going into food, it is important to choose wisely when making purchases.

TODAY Health reporter Dave Zinczenko compiled a list of snacks to avoid and what to eat instead for Super Bowl 2012.

According to a survey from Super Bowl sponsor Courtyard Hotel, chips and dips are the most popular Super Bowl snacks among Americans.

Zinczenko suggests Baked! Tostitos Scoops paired with salsa instead of regular Lay’s and dip, which are both packed with calories and fat.

When choosing a soup, Campbell’s Chunky Manhattan Clam Chowder is healthier than Campbell’s Chunky New England Clam Chowder. Zinczenko explains that the New England clam chowder is cream based, thus full of fat. The Manhattan Clam Chowder is made from a tomato-based broth and is full of antioxidants instead.

The Toronto Sun reports that those who tune in to the Super Bowl will consume over 2,000 calories on popular snacks within the first three hours of the game.
