News anchor apologizes for Santa remarks
News anchor Robin Robinson apologized Friday for her remarks that there was no Santa Claus.
Robinson, an anchor for Fox affiliate WFLD in Chicago, commented on the nightly news in a segment aimed to help parents curb any high-budget holiday gift expectations their children may have. She then advised parents to tell children that Santa doesn’t exist.
“Stop trying to convince your kids that Santa is Santa,” she said Tuesday. “That’s what my take is. Forget about it. That’s why they have these high expectations. They know you can’t afford it, so they’re going to ask some man in a red suit. There’s no Santa!”
Her words prompted angry responses from parents. This led to Robinson apologizing the following evening on the show The Talker in a segment titled ‘An Apology.’ She read and responded to numerous comments from viewers about her words.
“It was careless and callous to say what I said in what could have been mixed company,” Robinson said. “So many kids don’t get to be children that for those who do get to live the wonder and magic of Christmas, I would never spoil it intentionally. So I sincerely apologize.”
Robinson has been an anchor for the network since 1987.
